Rollstack vs Microsoft Copilot in PowerPoint:Drafting help vs a deck tied to your data
Copilot in PowerPoint was built to help you draft and polish slides: on brand with your template and Brand Kit, from a prompt, your files or a snapshot of an Excel workbook.

Verdict
Copilot keeps your deck on brand, but it works only inside Microsoft 365 and doesn't keep your numbers connected to your data, so they go out of date the moment your data changes and someone has to update and check them by hand.
Rollstack calculates every figure with a deterministic query (the same data always gives the same number) on Excel, Power BI or any other source, traces it back to its source, and refreshes the same deck in place, for every audience. Trusted by SoFi, Tripadvisor and Octopus Energy, Rollstack leads on 10 of the 12 comparison criteria below and matches Copilot on template and security.
Where Rollstack is stronger
Calculated from your data, traced from slide to source.
Every number comes from a query on your warehouse, BI dashboard or spreadsheet, every chart traces back to its source in Lineage, and your data lands in the same format on every refresh.
Every trusted source, connected directly.
Rollstack connects directly to Excel and Power BI, plus warehouses (Snowflake, Databricks), Tableau, Looker and other BI tools, Google Sheets, CRMs (Salesforce CRM Analytics, or HubSpot through the Rollstack API), PDFs and documents, and any source with an API. Copilot's interactive slides chart a snapshot of an Excel workbook that doesn't stay connected.
PowerPoint or Google Slides files for people outside your company.
Clients, partners and board members open a normal PowerPoint or Google Slides file, with no Power BI license or login.
A version for every audience.
Bursts build one deck per region, sales channel, team, product line or client from one template, each holding only the data its audience may see, and email each one to its owner.
Governance built-in for BI & LLMs.
Access follows your BI tools as well as your warehouse, Rollstack supports HIPAA, and you choose the model provider or bring your own.
Works the way you do.
Copilot Studio agents and other AI assistants can ask Rollstack for a deck through MCP, and your own systems can build, refresh and send decks through the Rollstack API.
At a glance
| Criterion | Rollstack | Copilot in PowerPoint |
|---|---|---|
| Data sources | Yes: warehouses (Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift), BI tools (Tableau, Power BI, Looker and more), spreadsheets (Excel, Google Sheets), CRMs (Salesforce CRM Analytics, or HubSpot through the Rollstack API), PDFs and documents, and any source with an API | Partly: a prompt, or files in OneDrive and SharePoint. Interactive slides chart a snapshot of an Excel workbook that doesn't stay connected |
| Verified numbers | Yes: charts, tables and figures come from queries on your sources, not from the model. Each one opens in Inspect with its source, query, filters and last update. Every AI change can be reviewed before the deck goes out | Partly: Copilot grounds its drafts in your files, and Microsoft asks you to review its output before you present or share it |
| Your template | Yes: builds inside your existing PowerPoint or Google Slides master | Yes: uses your template and Brand Kit; with Strict brand adherence, Copilot sticks to your approved layouts |
| Next cycle | Yes: refreshes in place, on a schedule or in one click. Your edits stay | Partly: Copilot Cowork can run a prompt on a schedule and edit a PowerPoint file in OneDrive or SharePoint. Each run regenerates the content |
| One version per audience | Yes: Bursts build a version per region (North America, EMEA, LATAM, APAC), sales channel, sales team, product line, product category, client or location, and send them on schedule | Partly: Cowork can produce several files in one task, with no template-per-audience feature |
| Personalized email delivery | Yes: each stakeholder receives a personalized email with their own version, on schedule | Partly: Cowork can send emails, and it asks for your permission before it does |
| Your permissions | Yes: follows the roles and permissions in your BI tools and warehouse. Each version holds only its audience's data | Partly: Copilot uses only content the builder can view. The separate Power BI add-in applies row-level security, but every viewer needs Power BI access |
| Security and audit | Yes: SOC 2 Type II, GDPR, supports HIPAA. SAML SSO and SCIM. Every update logged. On-premise BI over VPN | Yes: Microsoft 365 compliance, including GDPR, ISO 27001, ISO 42001, HIPAA and the EU Data Boundary, with Purview for Copilot prompts and responses |
| LLM choice | Yes: Claude Opus 5.5 or GPT 6.1 Sol, or your own Azure AI Foundry, OpenAI, Anthropic, Amazon Bedrock or Google Vertex AI account on the Enterprise plan | Partly: choose Auto, an OpenAI model or a Claude model when editing in PowerPoint. Bringing your own model is for custom agents only |
| API and MCP | Yes: build, refresh and send decks through the API, or from ChatGPT, Claude and other agents through MCP | Partly: Copilot Studio agents can call MCP tools, but Microsoft's Copilot APIs don't create or refresh files |
| Built for every team | Yes: sales, customer success, finance, business operations, RevOps, marketing, agencies and consultants, for one-off analysis and every report that repeats | Partly: a general assistant for every Microsoft 365 user |
| Native output | Yes: work in the Rollstack platform, or deliver PowerPoint, Google Slides and PDF files, plus Word and Google Docs, with native, editable charts and tables | Partly: PowerPoint files; interactive slides turn into static images in PDF exports |
| Best at | Decks built from business data, one-off or every week, month and quarter | Drafting, rewriting and formatting inside PowerPoint |

The comparison in depth
Where the numbers come from
Copilot drafts from a prompt or from files in OneDrive and SharePoint. Its interactive slides, rolling out since October 2026, can build a dashboard from a snapshot of an Excel workbook. They don't stay connected to the workbook, and opening the file resets them.
Rollstack connects directly to the source: Excel and Power BI, plus warehouses, other BI tools, Google Sheets, CRMs, PDFs and any source with an API. Every chart, table and number on a slide is the result of a query, so the deck shows exactly what the source says.
Checking the numbers
Copilot grounds its drafts in your files, and Microsoft asks you to review Copilot's output before you present or share it. Nothing on the slide shows a reviewer where each figure came from.
In Rollstack, every figure on a slide can be traced back to the raw data and each transformation applied to it. Reviewers can check numbers without rebuilding anything.

When Rollstack's AI makes changes, you can review them before the deck goes out: the original and the edited slide side by side, with all changes highlighted.

Your template
Here Copilot is strong. It uses your organization's template and Brand Kit, and with Strict brand adherence turned on, it sticks to your approved layouts.
Rollstack keeps your template as it is too, in PowerPoint and Google Slides. Upload your PowerPoint file, or import it from Google Slides or OneDrive, and it becomes a reusable template with your masters, placeholders, fonts and footer intact. Pick a dashboard, table or sheet as the source, and Rollstack builds the deck in that template, with native charts connected directly to your data.

Next month
Copilot Cowork can run a prompt on a schedule, such as a weekly status report every Friday, and edit a PowerPoint file in OneDrive or SharePoint. Each run regenerates the content with AI, and Cowork is billed by usage on top of a Premium license.
In Rollstack, next month is a refresh of the same deck. Only the numbers and charts change; your commentary, layout and slide order stay as you left them.
What about the Power BI add-in?
Microsoft's Power BI add-in for PowerPoint embeds live report pages and visuals in slides, and it respects row-level security. Every viewer needs an active Power BI account and access to the data, and Microsoft doesn't support sharing with other companies.
That rules it out for client-facing decks. Rollstack refreshes Power BI content into a normal PowerPoint or Google Slides file, so a client, partner or board member opens it without a Power BI license or login.
One template, every audience
Cowork can produce several files in one task, but Copilot has no way to turn one template into a version per audience.
Rollstack Bursts turn one template into a version per region, sales channel, team, product line or client, each filtered to its own data. A change to the template reaches every version on the next run.
Finance teams already run their reporting this way with Rollstack:
- SoFi updates 400+ slides across 30+ decks every month.
- Tripadvisor's finance analysts reclaimed 4,216 hours in Q1 2026.
- Octopus Energy automated its credit performance review cycle.
Permissions, security and your LLM
Copilot inherits Microsoft 365 compliance, including GDPR, ISO 27001, ISO 42001, HIPAA and the EU Data Boundary, and it only uses content the builder can view. When editing in PowerPoint, you can choose between OpenAI and Claude models; Claude is on by default for most commercial customers outside the EU, EFTA and UK. Bringing your own model is for custom agents only.
Rollstack matches these, and goes further in three places that matter to regulated and data-heavy teams:
- Follows the roles and permissions in your BI tools and warehouse, including row-level security, so each version contains only its audience's data.
- Logs every update and keeps every deck as it was sent, so you can show what a stakeholder saw and when.
- Lets you choose the LLM, whether that's Claude Opus 5.5, GPT 6.1 Sol or your own Azure AI Foundry, OpenAI, Anthropic, Amazon Bedrock or Google Vertex AI account on the Enterprise plan. Rollstack's model providers don't train on your data.
Using both
Many teams draft and polish with Copilot, then publish and refresh in Rollstack. Copilot Studio agents can call tools through MCP, so an agent can ask Rollstack for a deck whose numbers come from your sources.
Where the differences show up: the month-end finance pack
Here's a common scenario: your FP&A team sends a 25-slide pack to the leadership team after every close. The numbers come from an Excel model and a Power BI report.
With Copilot, you can draft the narrative slides, keep them on brand, and build an interactive slide from a snapshot of the Excel model. Each month the numbers still have to be brought in again, by hand or with a new Cowork run, and someone checks every one before the pack goes out.
With Rollstack, the pack is connected once to the Excel model and the Power BI report. After close, it refreshes. Your analysts review what changed, write the commentary and send. If each business unit, region or product line needs its own pack, a Burst creates one for each.
Who should pick which
Choose Rollstack if
- Your deck's numbers live in Excel, Power BI, Google Sheets, a warehouse, a CRM or any system with an API, and every figure has to match the source.
- You need the same deck next week, month or quarter, in the same format, with your edits kept.
- A reviewer has to trace each figure to its source before it goes out.
- Recipients are outside your company, or don't have Power BI licenses.
- You send a version to each region, sales channel, team, product line or client, each holding only the data its audience may see.
- You work in Google Slides as well as PowerPoint, or want to choose or bring your own LLM.
Copilot may be a fit if
- You need help drafting, rewording or formatting slides inside PowerPoint, on brand.
- Your deck starts from documents rather than data.
Common questions
Can Copilot create a PowerPoint from an Excel file?
Partly. Copilot's interactive slides, rolling out since October 2026, can build a dashboard from a snapshot of an Excel workbook. The data doesn't stay connected, and opening the file resets the interactive slides. Rollstack connects the deck directly to the workbook and refreshes it.
Does Copilot use my company template?
Yes. Copilot uses your organization's template and Brand Kit, and Strict brand adherence keeps it to your approved layouts.
Can I share Power BI visuals in a deck with clients?
Not with the Power BI add-in: Microsoft says B2B scenarios aren't supported, and every viewer needs access to the content. Rollstack puts refreshed Power BI content into a file your clients can open without a license.
Does Rollstack work with Microsoft 365?
Yes. Rollstack connects directly to Excel and Power BI, and to warehouses, other BI tools, Google Sheets, CRMs, PDFs and any source with an API. It builds in your PowerPoint template and exports native PowerPoint files.
Can I choose the AI model in Copilot?
When editing in PowerPoint, you can choose Auto, an OpenAI model or a Claude model. Rollstack lets your company choose the provider, or bring its own account on the Enterprise plan.
Can Rollstack send each stakeholder their own version?
Yes. Bursts create one version per region, sales channel, team, product line or client, and each stakeholder receives a personalized email with their own version, on schedule.
